Our Mission and Project Summary

01

Turning industrial by-product gases into tomorrow’s carbon solutions

This project supports national greenhouse gas reduction goals through the demonstration and scaleup of C1 gas conversion technologies tailored to industrial demands. By ensuring both technical viability and economic feasibility, the project aims to positions C1 gases as a vital carbon resource for the next-generation chemical industry

What are we
developing?
  • We are developing large-scale C1 gas conversion technologies that support NDC targets and meet the practical needs of industry. To ensure the economic viability of these technologies, we are advancing and validating core processes for converting low-grade byproduct C1 gases into value-added products.
Why is this
project
important?
  • There is an urgent need to develop and demonstrate technologies that contribute directly to achieving Korea’s NDCs in a practical and scalable way. As carbon neutrality shifts from being purely an environmental concern to a central economic challenge, technological solutions have become more essential than ever. Efficient conversion of byproduct C1 gases is now recognized as a key strategy for decarbonizing the industrial sector. Furthermore, securing C1 gas conversion routes will lay the foundation for using carbon as a future resource in the next-generation chemical industry.
How will we
achieve this?
  • We take a three-step approach to building a viable C1 gas-based chemical industry.
  • First, we utilize core technologies developed through the C1 Gas Refinery Project to enable efficient conversion of industrial byproduct C1 gases (Follow UP).
  • Second, we validate these core technologies in real industrial environments to ensure scalability and performance under actual operating conditions (Scale UP).
  • Finally, we develop industrial-ready technologies that meet the requirements of economic feasibility, environmental sustainability, and business viability – focusing on breakthrough innovations in currently unmet technological areas (Value UP).
When is this
happening?
  • 2024. 08. 01 - 2028. 12. 31
Who is
involved?
  • 서강대학교 에너지기술연구원 포항산업과학연구원 중앙대학교 경희대학교 울산과학기술원 고려대학교 CJ제일제당 한국화학연구원 아주대학교 전남대학교 서울대학교
02

Utilizing byproduct gases from high greenhouse gas-emitting industries advancement and demonstration-based commercialization of key technologies

This project aims to commercialize core C1 gas conversion technologies through demonstration and industrial application, focusing on the use of byproduct gases from steel, petrochemicals, and refining industries. To achieve this, the project is structured around four key research objectives:

  • Development of reliable and economically viable C1 gas conversion technologies
  • Establishment of large-scale platforms for the fundamental conversion of C1 gases
  • containing CO2
  • Creation of universal technologies applicable across diverse carbon emission sources
  • Securing proprietary technologies with strong market competitiveness

Based on the current level of technology, we have identified the key element that should be
incorporated into each individual project

  • Key Element 01

    Economical and reliable conversion technology

  • Key Element 02

Large-scale and direct conversion technology for
    C1 gases including CO2

  • Key Element 03

Versatile technology applicable to various carbon
    emission sources

  • Key Element 04

    Market-dominating core technology

To secure these goals, additional industrialization-ready core technologies and gap-filling technologies will be developed, validated in real industrial environments, and refined to achieve high technological maturity.
