Core Technologies

We are developing a technology that converts methane and carbon dioxide—two major greenhouse gases found in industrial waste gases—into biodegradable plastics. Beyond simply utilizing microorganisms to convert a single greenhouse gas, our ultimate goal is to simultaneously convert the two most impactful greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) into high-value biodegradable plastic, PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates). Rather than being limited to lab-scale experiments, we are working toward industrialization through the development of bench-scale and pilot-scale processes. To ensure applicability in industrial settings, we are also developing microbial strains resistant to by-product gases. Additionally, we are incorporating chemical conversion processes to improve the properties of the produced PHA, enhancing its market potential.

Key Outcomes

  • 1. Overcoming the technical and economic limitations of conventional microorganism-based direct greenhouse gas conversion by developing core technology for simultaneous low-grade CO2/CH4 conversion. This will help lead the production of biodegradable polymers from low-grade CO2/CH4, facilitating technology transfer and commercialization.

  • 2. Contributing to carbon neutrality (2050), NDC (2030), ESG management, and climate change solutions by reducing emissions of CO2 and methane (which has over 80 times the greenhouse effect of CO2). This will help industries and nations comply with greenhouse gas regulations, promote growth, and create job opportunities.

  • 3.Contributing to the development of bio-chemical industry and reducing South Korea’s dependence on petrochemicalindustries by enhancing the performance of microbial strains developed for low-grade CO2/CH4 conversion to a variety of chemical compounds.

  • 4. Expanding the use of biodegradable bio-plastics, helping to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable environmental protection.

  • 5. Strengthening the technological competitiveness of domestic companies involved in PHA commercialization.
